On November 12, Monte del Sol’s world history teacher, Dayni Staddon will lead eight high school students from New Mexico, including Monte students Samuel Mitchell, Samuel Walling, Jazmin Ruiz and Colin Fagan to participate in the Model International Criminal Court (MICC) in Krzyżowa, Poland. Ms. Staddon, who has taken on the role of trip leader, will travel with the eight students to Poland. The Kreisau Initiative is an organization in Germany which sponsors the program worldwide and provides funding to involve students from all over the world in historic human rights and international criminal court model trials. This will be the 3rd year that Monte del Sol students have been a part of this training and experience.
MICC is organized by the Kreisau Initiative in Berlin. The program brings together high school and university students from all over the world to take on roles that explore the simulation of trials that were held before the ICC (International Criminal Court). The project fosters intercultural dialogue and understanding among students of various national and social backgrounds. The purpose of this work is to inform students about the importance of human rights and humanitarian law.
During the project the students take on responsibilities as prosecutors, members of the defense team, judges, or members of the observing media in international teams. Subject to the simulations are final pleadings of historic cases that were heard before the international tribunals, namely the Nuremberg Tribunal, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR). In that context, students can develop an understanding of the background of the conflicts, learn who was responsible, and learn that a fair trial is a basis for sustainable justice and the protection of human rights.
