I was born in Carrington. North Dakota, and lived there until my family piled into a horse-drawn wagon headed for San Diego, California when I was four years old. The long journey was cut short in Colorado, where fate had decided that the beautiful San Luis Valley would be their ultimate destination. I am an artist and teacher living and working in Santa Fe, NM. Growing up in the shadow of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, I found myself constantly working with my hands. High school classes in woodshop and welding led to a B.A. focused on drawing and painting and eventually to a M.A. with an emphasis on sculpture. I have sixteen years of art teaching experience, ten in Colorado and six in New Mexico. In 2022 I won the Middle School Art Teacher of the Year award for New Mexico. I am excited to be at Monte Del Sol and to be working with Monte’s amazing student artists!

The mentoring program is a wonderful way to get students real life experience in whatever profession they may want to pursue. It is important to get that real life glimpse into the realities of the work. Many people go to college for a chosen field only to find out they don’t really like the profession after all.

In Lima, Peru, fresh out of high school, disoriented and simultaneously greedy in regard to different fields (wanted to go for several–often unrelated–majors) I went for Business Administration; paradoxically, the farthest I could go from what I am now.
After a few years of corporate working I dropped everything and went to Europe to study Art. I remained in the Old World about two years and then returned to Lima where I alternated working as an artist and newspaper reporter. I caught the news bug and decided to pursue it professionally, landing at San Francisco State University where I earned degrees in International Relations and Journalism with the intention of working as a foreign correspondent.
However, thanks to one of those unexpected turns in my life I ended up in 2004 working as a teacher at the East Bay Waldorf School; enamoured with its philosophy and pedagogy I enrolled at the Rudolf Steiner College (Sacramento, CA) where I obtained my WTC (Waldorf Teacher Licence). I remained in the Bay Area until 2008 when I moved to Santa Fe, and worked since then at the SF Waldorf School until May 2023.

I like reading, repairing/creating/repurposing things; traveling, river rafting and hiking with my partner, watching sports and training on my bicycle. I’m a bird watcher. My parents live in Lima, Peru and my four siblings live in different parts of the world (Lima, Madrid, Spain; Houston and Santiago, Chile), which makes family reunions a very complicated affair. My 24-year-old son graduated from NAU and my daughter, who is 21, is currently attending college in Sydney, Australia.

I was born in Manchester, England. I love to read and have usually completed 52 books a year. For me reading is like breathing, it is just something I do. I worked in Italy for two years. I enjoy trivia and complete several quizzes each day. I am passionate about soccer and am a lifelong supporter of Manchester United and England. My wife is a science researcher and educator and my three wonderful kids are students. There is a dog too.

I didn’t have a traditional educational career. I originally started studying a career in Political Science, and planned to work in government. Things changed in my life, and I learned about an organization named Teach for America, which is how I was drawn to a career in education. I was able to teach in California, Nevada, and eventually I came back to my old high school, since I went to 9th and 10th grade at Monte del Sol.

I am very passionate about languages. I believe they are the window into other cultures. I currently speak four languages, and have made it a goal this year to learn more. I am also an avid traveller, motorcycle enthusiast, and video game enthusiast, I rarely have the time for it though. I work as a rideshare driver sometimes through Uber and Lyft, aside from teaching. I recently married an elementary school teacher and we went to Africa over the summer. I have just a younger sister, and I am originally from Chihuahua. I’m also a big fan of Star Wars and Firefly. I love learning about history and cultures, and that influences my teaching practice as well.
What do you love about Monte del Sol?
It is a unique school, you really get to know the students. It was a culture shock when I had to use the first name of teachers to address them, as a student. That was a unique experience. I also find Mentorship very rewarding, and I’m sure students do too. Teachers are seen and heard unlike a major high school sometimes. It is definitely refreshing to work here as a teacher, compared to prior experiences in Nevada and California.
What do you love about teaching or learning?
I love teaching languages because I want to give students the tools to navigate in other cultures. As we become more globalized and interconnected, it is important to know more languages just to function in modern society. I had the opportunity to meet people from around the world, like South Africa, Turkey, Lebanon, etc. and most students already know three or four languages by the time they are in high school. I want the same opportunities for Monte kids.
What do you feel makes Monte del Sol unique?
The connection to each other and the labour conditions. I know that education is at crossroads in this country, and educators are facing more challenges than before. I’m not saying we are not, but I do feel that we are being supported by our leadership in these trying times.

I have been teaching for 34 years. I earned her bachelor’s degree in Cultural Anthropology from Skidmore College. While there, I traveled to the Yucatán Peninsula to photograph Maya sites and studied archaeology and languages my junior year in Greece. I earned a master’s degree in Anthropology and Film from Temple University. Part of my studies included a year at the Anthropology Film Center in Santa Fe where she directed “The Cleaning of the Aequia Madre” in 1989. I also have sponsored the LGBTQ+ student club and the middle school enrichment club. In 2021-2022, I was on the team of New Mexico educators that researched, wrote and revised the K-12 Social Studies Standards in NM focusing on tribal sovereignty, social justice and sustainability. I am thrilled this is the first time in the history of New Mexico, that LGBTQ history will be required in all public and charter schools in the state. In 2024-2025, I served on a small advisory committee of educators and activists who wrote the first Black Education Instructional Scope 1.0 facilitated by the staff in the New Mexico Public Education Department under the Black Education Act. Currently, I am President of our MdS NEA teacher union and continue to collaborate for the best teaching and learning conditions at Monte del Sol.
